Traditionally, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry are known as disciplines at the intersection of organic chemistry and pharmacology dealing with the design and synthesis of pharmaceutical molecules. Based on more recent definition provided by IUPAC, medicinal chemistry is a chemistry-based discipline, involving aspects of the biological, medical and pharmaceutical sciences concerning with the invention, discovery, design, identifi cation and preparation of biologically active compounds. Here at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, the research activities involve different aspects of medicinal chemistry, such as computational (molecular modeling, docking and cheminformatics) drug design and synthesis, drug analysis, investigation of physic-chemical properties of drug substances, bioinformatics, biotechnology and structural biochemistry.
